The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Here's a test for partners in committed relationships who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your significant other and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its streaming debut via Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like conventional physical horror, but within Together resides a deep contemplation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a unique chemistry to their characters, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative begins when Tim and Millie transition from the urban environment to the country for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity starts to affect the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The whole movie is a slow burn of scares, blending moments of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but never too gross) body horror, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes during something horrific). The director weaves these elements together expertly and wraps them up in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and distant from his social circle. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is amplified by the fact he can’t drive and relies on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that single viewers have interpreted the film as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply look at your partner and say, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can embark on today.
