Ever since the premiere of Campaign 4, fresh DM Brennan Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with deep backstory, a wide array of heroes, and a thrilling plot featuring divine entities, demons, and dark forces increasing in power within the city.
Heads-up: Spoilers for Episode 3 of Campaign 4 lie ahead.
The Soldiers Table Unveiled
The third episode concluded with a huge suspense moment and revealed the first table of adventurers who will branch out from the central cast to begin their own adventure, separate from the remaining groups.
The Soldiers table consists of the determined fighter (brought to life by Travis Willingham), Thimble (Laura Bailey), the strong-willed figure (Whitney Moore), Wicander Halovar (Sam Riegel), and the mysterious adventurer (the actor).
Why Split the Party?
Given 13 cast members, it was evident from the outset that keeping everyone at a single group would be unworkable.
That’s why, the first four episodes of Campaign 4 serve as an Introduction, intertwining the characters’ stories before branching into three separate parties: Fighters, Schemers, and Seekers.
Characteristics of the Combat Party
According to Brennan Lee Mulligan, the warrior group is for players who prefer a classically intense fight-heavy narrative style where non-violent answers are rare.
At first glance, figures such as the hesitant healer Wicander Halovar might appear mismatched, but the events of episode 3 show why these particular heroes are best suited for the Soldiers table.
Reasons to Leave
For one thing, the party understands precisely where to go next after a violent initial meeting with the antagonists.
Casimir of the deceased character—whose passing started the story’s plot—exploited the enemy for his personal gain, breaking into the secret base, assaulting the rogue, and stealing all the enchanted items to sell off.
The antagonist then settled his debts and ran away to a fortified location in Gormalay, Timmony, north of the city, with Teor’s brother close behind.
Character Drivers
Additionally, each character has a personal reason to leave the city the urban setting:
- The agile hero, as the close ally and trusted friend, desires retribution.
- Kattigan is familiar with Timmony and cautions that it is a dangerous place.
- The strong character and The cleric, having disobeyed his family’s wishes to eliminate the fighter and instead freed him, have nowhere else to go.
- However, their position as key figures in the influential clan could enable the team enter areas they typically wouldn’t be able to.
- Moreover, The grateful character pledged a life debt to Wicander for his deliverance and will now accompany him everywhere.
Wanted and Hunted
Lastly, all of them are wanted by the rulers that control Dol-Makjar for a variety of reasons, making lingering locally dangerous:
- The rogue and The character are known criminals.
- Tyranny and Wicander defied the influential house and the army of fiends they are allied with.
- Teor is targeted for elimination by House Halovar.
This leaves them few options but to head to Timmony in pursuit of Casimir.
